Changes That May Cause Concern

You may also discover as you lose weight that you develop sagging skin in some areas which can cause unexpected changes in your physical appearance. If these changes trouble you, talk with your healthcare team and/or your support group. Options may be available to help you with these changes. For example, adding strengthening exercises in addition to your cardio workouts can help tone your muscles and lessen the amount of sagging skin.

You may also experience the following after your surgery:

  • Pain into your shoulder or neck within a few days of your surgery is normal. The pain usually goes away in a few days.7 If it persists or is associated with shortness of breath or chest pain, consult with your surgeon.
  • Regurgitation, nausea, acid reflux, or constipation - signs that you need to eat less, eat more slowly, chew thoroughly, or eat different foods7
  • Pressure at the top of your stomach or hiccupping that can mean your stomach is full, continuing to eat beyond these signs may cause discomfort7
  • Difficulty with carbonated beverages - the bubbles may block the stoma and cause burping7
  • Hair loss (alopecia) - some patients experience temporary hair thinning after surgery7
